What’s in store for the chlor-alkali market in 2018?

Several chlor-alkali mercury based plants closed down last month in accordance with the European legislation.

One of the countries that will be the most impacted is Spain. Ercros plants at Flix and Vila-seca closed down in December but the company is expanding membrane capacity at Vila-seca and Sabiñánigo to offset some of this loss. In the meantime, INOVYN’s unit at Martorell ceased operations in operations on 10 December. Solvay requested a an extension to continue production beyond the deadline date at its Torrelavega unit but this was rejected by the regional government, however Portuguese producer CUF has confirmed that it will invest €55 million in the acquisition of some of Solvay’s plants and in the construction of a new chlorine plant at the Torrelavega site.
