Polyamide markets split along regional lines, but for how much longer?

Polyamide resin prices increased sharply in the first quarter of 2017, pulled along by rapidly increasing raw materials and strong demand across a variety of end-uses and applications. Producers of both polyamide 6 and polyamide 66 resins were able to pass through price increases with relative ease given the tight supply/demand fundamentals, and in some cases the producers achieved notable margin increases as well.

All good things usually come to an end, and when raw material prices decreased in March and April, it appeared to signal the beginning of the end for high polyamide resin prices. However, polyamide prices in North America and Europe disconnected from raw materials and have remained at elevated levels well into the second quarter. This means polyamide producers, and in some cases the producers of key intermediates such as caprolactam and adipic acid, have further expanded margins during the period.
