High Feedstock Costs Challenge Maleic Anhydride Margins

The global maleic anhydride market is firming in early 2017 as the trend for very high benzene prices continued and n-butane and mixed butanes prices in the US, Europe and the Middle East saw significant firming, as well. Supply and demand are not tight but the market saw a big run-up in price as a result of feedstock cost pressure from both raw materials markets. Margin improvement has been seen in all major regions.

Significant changes since our last analysis include a substantial slow-down in the growth of the Chinese economy, which affects all markets, including the maleic anhydride derivatives arenas, such as UPR and food additives. Maleic demand growth for China and for the world is now estimated at under 4% for the period from 2016 through 2030 (down from around 5% at the time of our last study).
